An open letter to people pissed off by Laci Green
alright listen up and listen good
you are in possession of enough intelligence to set up a blog all by yourself and type out your angry little thoughts, so you must also be capable of seeing that Laci Green is a girl who tries really hard to not only be aware of LGBT issues, but also dedicates a whole load of her time to helping others be aware too.
She is cisgendered. She didn’t know that “tranny” was offensive. She didn’t realise. Nobody had told her. We are not born into the world knowing certain things are upsetting to others. We rely on others to tell us. Getting angry at Laci Green for saying “tranny” is like getting angry at a newborn baby for screaming.
What should have happened is that someone should have sent her a message saying ‘hey, just so you know, “tranny” isn’t really an acceptable word to use’, and she would have said thank you, and woud never have used it again. Instead what happened is that a whole bunch of self-righteous individuals twisted their bitter little faces into the shape of an asshole and squeezed their indignant bile all over the good work she has done for years either side of that isolated incident, like a big bunch of idiotic fuckwads, and then the rest of the world finds out about it and what’s left in their heads at the end of the day is ‘trans people are a big bunch of idiotic fuckwads’. Congratulations, you just set your own cause back a decade.
People blogging angrily about Laci Green: you are infinitely more damaging to LGBT issues than Laci Green is. You should be intensely ashamed of yourselves for lacking the self-control needed to help the world understand that LGBT rights are an important necessity. How do you think people of colour would be treated today if Rosa Parks, instead of fighting for equality calmly and with outstanding dignity on that bus instead decided to flip her lid and splutter out a string of death threats? Every member of the LGBT community currently attacking Laci Green is a dog shitting where it eats, and I am disgusted and ashamed of you. Goodnight.
I just want to point out that your “what should have happened” scenario did in fact already happen. The video in question was made in 2009 and as far as I understand the situation Laci retracted and apologised for it ages ago.
This current controversy was sparked by her responding to a question about it four days ago, in which, again, she makes it very clear that she understands that “tranny” is an offensive term and that using it was a mistake made out of ignorance.
I’m kind of annoyed that this whole ordeal is being referred to as a ‘controversy’. It’s not nuanced, it’s not multifaceted. It’s a bunch of vile ignoramuses just being horrible to someone who doesn’t deserve it.
